Breadprayers, Newburgh
and Rosekill Art Farm, New York

Performing in the streets of Newburgh.

The night before I was making all the buns at a fireplace at Rosekill Art Farm in Rosendale , New York. With good help from Jill McDermid and Erik Hokanson. This firing of buns was happening as a performance during an event called Under the Stars. The day after I brought the buns with me to Ann Street Gallery, where we found out that the best place to meet the people of Newburgh was in the streets. We moved the performance out in the streets of Newburgh.

The people gathered fast around me as I was sitting at a chair making my big bun chain. Those who wanted to join were asked to write down their dreams, wishes and hopes on a piece of paper, then stuff this prayer inside a bun. They were asked to give the bun to me. This process went on for hours, and many people stayed until the end. One Haitian woman came to me and asked if it was some kind of vodou I was doing, and I was thinking on that for a second.

The performance developed into an intense dance with swirling and singing in the street, and in the end I wrapped the buns in a box and digged it down in a garden.

I hoped to bring good energy to the people of Newburgh, to give them inspiration and hope, open up doorways.

I feel my thoughts were well received.
